Introduction What Is Jio eSIM?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card that’s built into your smartphone, tablet, or other connected devices (like smartwatches). Unlike a traditional plastic SIM, you don’t physically insert an eSIM. Instead, the operator sends a digital profile that gets installed over the air no tiny card to lose or replace.

For Reliance Jio users in India, switching to an eSIM means:
- You don’t need to handle a physical SIM card.
- Your plan, number and services remain the same.
- It’s more secure and eco-friendly compared to plastic SIMs.
This article explains how to get Jio eSIM, including requirements, step-by-step processes (online and SMS), activation, installation and tips.
Who Can Get a Jio eSIM
Before starting the process, you should check the following:
1. Device Compatibility
Not all phones support eSIM. You must have a device that is eSIM-enabled — like newer models of iPhone, Android (e.g., Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy), or tablets with eSIM support. Usually, the phone settings will list both the IMEI and EID numbers — you need these during activation.
2. Active Jio Mobile Number
You must already have an active Jio number either prepaid or postpaid — to convert it to an eSIM. This can be from a physical SIM card you currently use.
3. Updated Email ID
Your Jio account should have a registered and verified email address. Jio uses this email to send your eSIM profile or QR code needed for installation.
How to Get a Jio eSIM – Method 1: Using the MyJio App
The easiest way to request your Jio eSIM is directly through the MyJio mobile app.
Step-by-Step
- Open the MyJio app:
Log in with your Jio number that you want to upgrade to eSIM. - Search for eSIM:
In the search bar of the app, type “Switch to eSIM” and tap the result. This starts the request process. - Verify Email:
Confirm your registered email ID. A verification OTP will be sent to that email — enter it correctly. - Enter Device EID:
You’ll need to enter the EID (eSIM ID) number for the phone where the eSIM will be activated. You can find EID in your device Settings → About phone. - Mobile OTP Verification:
An OTP will be sent to your Jio mobile number. Enter it to confirm the request. - Cooling Period:
After submitting, a 2-hour “cooling period” applies as per telecom guidelines. During this time, nothing changes with your current SIM services. - Confirm via IVR Call:
After the cooling period, you’ll receive an automated call from +91-2235072222 asking you to confirm the eSIM request. You simply answer and enter the number prompted.
How to Get Jio eSIM – Method 2: Via SMS
If you prefer not to use the app or can’t install it, Jio also allows eSIM requests by SMS:
Step-by-Step
- Find your EID & IMEI:
Go to Settings → About phone and note down the 32-digit EID and 15-digit IMEI. - Send GETESIM SMS:
Open the messaging app on the phone with your physical Jio SIM and send:GETESIM <32-digit EID> <15-digit IMEI>Send this message to 199. - Receive eSIM Number:
Jio will send you a 19-digit virtual eSIM number via SMS and email. - Send SIMCHG SMS:
Now send:SIMCHG <19-digit eSIM number>to 199. - Consent SMS:
After two hours (cooling period), you’ll get an SMS asking for consent. Reply with 1 to proceed. - Confirm via IVR Call:
As with the app method, answer the automated confirmation call and enter the number when instructed. - Receive Activation Details:
You’ll soon receive further SMS and email with your activation code or QR for eSIM installation.
Installing the eSIM on Your Device
Once your eSIM request is approved and processed, Jio will send you one of the following:
- A QR code via email or
- A notification on your device with an activation profile.
iPhone:
Go to Settings → Mobile Data → Add Data Plan and scan the QR code or enter details as instructed.
Android:
Depending on the brand (Samsung, Google Pixel, etc.), go to Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add Mobile Plan, then scan QR code or enter the activation code manually.
(Exact process varies by device model and OS version.)
